Additional Information About Acinos alpinus - Rock Thyme

More About Rock Thyme...

Rock Thyme, Acinos alpinus, also known as Alpine Calamint, is a low-growing, mound-forming, woody-based, evergreen perennial with small, aromatic, elliptic to rounded, sometimes toothed, mid- to dark green leaves and spike-like whorls of pretty violet colored flowers with white markings in midsummer. Plants grow 4 to 6 or so inches in height with a width of 12 inches or more.

Rock Thyme is easy to grow in almost any type of well-drained soil, doing best in a hot dry soil. Constantly wet or soggy soils are not tolerated. It likes full sun to part shade. It will not grow well in full to mostly shaded spots.

Rock Thyme is right at home in rock gardens and other gardens with dry soil. Use it along pathways, as a border, or a filler between shrub plantings. It looks especially nice around boulders and is great for crevices.

The leaves of Rock Thyme can be used as a flavoring in cooked dishes and also as a tea substitute.
